Every Song: I Beam, You Beam (Remix)

Postby NathanJN » Fri Apr 20, 2012 5:30 am

"I Beam, You Beam (Remix)" is the eighth and final song on the Old Wives Tales EP.

Here's some possible topics for discussion:
1. Favorite Line
2. Least Favorite Line
3. Musical Quality
4. Images the Song Brings to Mind
5. Overall Rating (Using the entire body of JE music as a means of comparison . . . not just the album the song appears on.)
6. Comparison to other version (We Are The Music Makers)

The lyrics for this, can be found on the We Are The Music Makers album here:

Lyrics:

I Beam, You Beam

laser boy I'm called
the one who makes and creates toys
for imaginations to become what they were once
long before the hourglass was cast we were ageless
coloring the phantom ghost of time with our last breath

I beam, you beam
I beam, you beam

there's nowhere else for love to bury deep herself
or scorn, the last parting sigh
of stillborn saintly souls
arise my love

eager for the march
through rainbow arch
I proclaim much
all the ancient fathers rest their heads
in observed watch

wizards bring a dark curse to the land
with wand in hand
from a book of black words comes the name
of a lamb slain

This is one of my favorite JE remixes. For a long time I liked it more than the original, it being the version I heard first.

Definitely has a nice groove, and puts a good spin on the original, better than most remixes do.

I agree. I really like this re-mix. I don't remember which version I heard first (probably the original mix), but I think I prefer this version over the original slightly.

While the pogo-stick-springy sound effect in the original is a nice novelty, the song is much more stream-lined without it. Overall, the song just sounds slicker and cooler.

It's a great way to end the EP!

I think this is a good, fairly neutral representation of the composition itself that just about anyone can listen to without being put off by all the strange noises and two long solos. Come to think of it, maybe doing versions like this is what Ronnie should have done instead of doing an "acoustic album" (which wasn't really acoustic anyway).

All that said, I do like the original more, especially in the context of the entire album.

I just can't get into any version of this song. The chorus annoys me greatly. :?

What does it mean anyway? Almost sounds like something you could find at a hardware store. I-beam, U-beam...

Ha! Must be some kind of hidden meaning. Something involving freemasonry, no doubt.
