The Cure
The Smiths
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Depeche Mode
Cocteau Twins

*I'd have listed JD, but since the majority of their stuff was in the late 70s.....

Here are my favorite 80's bands:
INXS
The Cult
The Smiths
Morrissey
Erasure
Pet Shop Kittens
Depeche Mode
Oingo Boingo
New Order
U2
R.E.M.
The Choir
The Alarm
Mad At The World
The 77's
Howard Jones
thompson Twins
the cure
ministry
lifesavers
These are the bands I'm thinking of off hand....I wasn't really "allowed" to listen to really dark music....because my parents were fairly conservative.
I've been down so long....it looks like up to me.

My list was just a top5, but there were other bands that played the soundtrack to my teenage years-

Echo & the Bunnymen
New Order
David Bowie(not technically 80s, but did some great stuff then)
Gary Numan
Jesus And Mary Chain
Human League
Cabaret Voltaire
OMD
Adam & the Ants
PiL
Young Marble Giants

I'll tell ya-living in Oklahoma and listening to this kind of stuff didn't win me any popularity contests. LOL
Bauhaus

Dave,
I was glad to see someone mention Tears for Fears. You've inspired me to go put some on right now.

Pet shop kittens! That's funny.

You know, I really liked the band Breathe, who had some massive hits around 1987/88, and had a fantastic singer named David Glasper, who has more or less disappeared. I read some critic that called them the last of the great New Romantic bands.

Their hits were "Hands to Heaven," "How Can I Fall?"... they had a second album that flopped but had a fantastic song called "Does she love that man?" which was actually a single and broke the top 40, but then they were dropped from their record company and that was that...

There were so many great bands in the 80s, and lots of great songs for which the bands had no more hits too... think of "Rock Me amadeus" or that Thomas Head guy or whatever his name was...

Anyone remember a band called Lotus Eaters? They did a brilliant song called The First Picture Of You. Lovely tune.

I really like Tears for Fears, especially The Hurting.

One tune I still listen to almost daily is Souvenir-OMD. It's always been my pick for Most Beautiful Song of All-Time. It kinda defines the entire decade for me.
