Question about live performance

Postby Dr. M » Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:21 pm

I was listening to a recording of a live show you did recently that someone released online, specifically to your performance of Horse of Faded Grandeur, which I thought was very very good, very impassioned, and it led me to a question. What do you feel when you sing this song? Exuberance, pangs of sadness, or somewhere in between? I ask because to me it's so very mixed, so utterly bittersweet. I know in the moment you may be feeling more like "I hope I don't forget the words or crack on the high notes", but ideally speaking, what do you feel?

Great question, and thanks for the nice words. It's hard to put my finger on this. When you've sang a song too many times, some of the emotion that went into it's creation can be a little absent. In a loud, live setting, it can be more a case of performance than emotion, although the latter always makes the former better. Occasionally the two combine and the result is joyous.
