Joy Electric + anything thoughtful

favorite album and why

Postby david » Mon Jul 23, 2012 4:22 pm

I'm sure this has been done a million times, but who's to say we can't have another round? What's your favorite album and why? It's always interesting to learn the different ways people can appreciate the same band.

For me: We Are the Music Makers. I know, everyone seems to hold their nose at this album, and I admit that it can be a bit repetitive. But I think the hooks are actually pretty good, and the overall tone and imagery have a cohesiveness that didn't emerge again until many albums later. Besides, it's fun to root for the underdog!

It's hard to choose, but my favorite album is The Tick Tock Treasury. For me, it just defines Joy Electric's style. It's also the first album I ever heard from Joy Electric. The vocals in this album are my favorite, and just Ronnie's extremely catchy electronica makes it fun to listen to. On a personal note this album's songs have really sticked with me and it's really easy for me to just get lost in them. Still.... all the other albums are just as amazing...

My favorite is The White Songbook. Have something special to me and i love the melodies and songs no matter how long they are. Is a sad, nostalgic album but i love it because so and is unique not like the other albums i love sing-a-long while listening a lot.

I thought "Hello, Mannequin" had the best batch of songs that Ronnie has written. In terms of production and the overall sound, I really enjoyed "Ministry of Archers." So, I guess I can't pick a favorite.

You know, that's really interesting. When Hello Mannequin came out, I was actually pretty disappointed. The White Songbook had blown me away and I guess I wasn't prepared for the next album. I think I just wrote it off really quickly. With time, I've come to realize that I made a hasty judgement and the album has grown on me. But it's interesting to hear someone actually pick that out specifically as a possible favorite.

I've said it before and will gladly say it again: The White Songbook is one of the greatest albums ever made. It is the work of a seminal creative genius at the very height of his powers. It's also proof that music is more than the sum of its parts. It takes the exact same ingredients of every other JE album, and somehow rises above and beyond, to greater heights and deeper depths. I will love it till the day I die.

As for the rest of the albums, it's hard for me to rank them. Melody is a consistent favorite, TOO goes down easy, WATMM is so loveable for its strangeness. Every album has really great moments, and the fact that we've seen so many different answers to this question is a testament to that. It's especially hard when you've grown up with a band, and every album since Christian Songs has a very specific period of time in your life that they're associated with. Hard to discern subjective feelings from more objective musical observations.

The White Song Book . . . because every single song is amazing.

The Ministry of Archers is a close second. The melody, vocals and heavier beat make this album shine!

I would say that the technicallity of music, Hello, Mannequin is my favorite album. 5/5.

The first time I heard Hello Mannequin, I was totally blow away. I thought that the synths and melodies were very techincal and beautiful, and the lyrics were very well written. After the 100th listen, I knew that this album demostrated the greatest abliity of Sir Ronald Martin. I still think it is his greatest album.

Tick Tock Treasury and The White Sonbook are the most musical albums. 4.75/5
My Grandfather the cubist might be my most favorite album lyrically. 4/5.
Melody and Robot Rock have to be the most groundbreaking albums.4. 5/5.
The Otherly Opus and The Ministry of Archers were more or less indifferent for me. 3/5.

Other Albums:
Old Wives Tales.4/5.
Christainsongs 3/5.
Unelectric-4/5.
Five Star for Failure-3/5.
We are The Music Makers-4/5.
Land of Misfits-2/5.
Favorites At Play-3.5/5.
Curiosities and Such-4/5.
Starcadia-3.5/5.
The Art and Craft of Popular Music(disc one)-4/5.
Workmanship-3/5.
Montgolfier and the Romantic Ballons-3.5/5.
Friend of Mannequin-3.75/5.
Tick Tock Companion-4/5.
Children of the Lord-3/5.

Five Stars being on the bottom is still a travesty.

In no particular order:

The Otherly Opus :!: :!: :!:
Old Wives Tales :!: :!: :!:
My Grandfather The Cubist

EDIT: Melody

I'm missing every CD from Hello Mannequin onwards. "Missing" as in I never purchased them. Now that I'm getting back into joy e, I'm tryin to buy all the CDs I missed. I really wanna hear "Montgolfier" and "Starcadia" :(

From what I've heard about Montgolfier, it sounds like it would be a favorite album of mine.

I created an account to say that this is exactly how I would rank these albums, though I have listened to only 70% of them. I am particularly fond of WATMM, which IMO, is a startlingly good electronic album, really unlike anything of its time- lowfi moodiness, steeped in surreality. I mean I can't say enough about it.

That album to me sounds like bushwhacking through a very dense forest full of thick trees and shrubbery, except all of the plants are made out of blinking electronics and wires, and all through a fog so dense you can barely see your hand in front of your face. I wish somebody could paint this. Anywayz, yes I like it a lot.

oh gosh thank you for taking the time to make an account just to agree with me!

I totally agree with everything you and dr m said (a rare occasion indeed) about watmm. You should really do yourself a favor and check out whatever albums/eps you have missed out on in regards to the Joy E catalog. Some really great you're missing out on :)
