Every Song: Sugar Rush

"Sugar Rush" is the first song on the Robot Rock album.

Here's some possible topics for discussion:
1. Favorite Line
2. Least Favorite Line
3. Musical Quality
4. Images the Song Brings to Mind
5. Overall Rating (Using the entire body of JE music as a means of comparison . . . not just the album the song appears on.)
6. Comparison to other version (Unelectric)

The lyrics for this song can be found on the Robot Rock album here:

Lyrics:

Sugar Rush

i get a sugar rush
thinking of you too much

i only want to be
with you for all eternity
a holiday that will never
go away

i only want to be
with you for all eternity
i only want to know
the things you have for
me to grow
i only want to be
part of your loving family
a holiday that will never
go away

1997. It's been fifteen years since Robot Rock came out. This album was my introduction to Joy Electric (although I'll write about the first song I had ever heard next week).

Sugar Rush was the second JE song I had ever heard. I'm still not sure why I like the song.

Is it a love song to some gal?
Is it worship song?

Lyrically it seems almost juvenile (even when I listened to it 15 years ago). And yet, I think that's part of the appeal. The speaker in the song is so filled with exuberance, he is filled with a joy that seems almost childish and inappropriate.

But doesn't joy . . . real joy . . . fill us with such excitement that it seems childish and unbecoming?

This song is so fun!

I think I have a love hate relationship with song, much like Ronnie himself haha. I loved it when I first heard it, now I dunno. I do like the crazy breakbeat version on The Army of Wires, oops I mean Land of the Misfits EP.

Totally silly, sickly sweet, and obnoxious. And I love it.

Super catchy pop song done in such a different way compared to the rest of the catalogue. I came into the fold around the Tick Tock era, so I was caught off guard by this one going thru older releases.
It's almost like this song was done as a joke, but with a sliver of real sentiment behind it. Consequently becoming one of the most popular tracks. I think "Sugar Rush" is to Joy Electric like "Fight For Your Right To Party" is to The Beasty Boys. Both a not-so-serious tune with a big hook that almost became an albatross to the band after a while. Pretty sure this one is retired from the live set. I know the Beastys refuse to play "Fight.." anymore.
I don't know, just a thought.
Funny story, not sure if anybody is familiar with the defunct noise-punk band Blood Brothers, but back in 2005 or '06, I saw them in Houston. After the show, the lead singer noticed my Joy E shirt, and started singing "Sugar Rush".

This is the best and worst song to ever exist. I cant praise it specifically because the sheer irony of this song says enough.

This song really is a valuable gem (for better or for worse) in Ronald Martin catalog of synthetic sounds so some respect has to be given

This was the very first Joy Electric song I ever heard. I loved it, I loved every song on the album (except the last one, never a favorite). But it didn't take long for it to turn into a skip for me. I don't think I've listened to the whole song in... well... a very, very, very long time. And that's ok with me. Often times these threads have me rushing to itunes to listen to things I haven't listened to in years, but not this time.

Not familiar with them . . . but a great story non-the-less.
