Operating System

Postby SolaDeoGloria » Sat Apr 04, 2009 10:01 pm

Okay, maybe my asking this question is simply the result of spending too much time doing my computer science assignments...but what operating system do you use (if you use more than one, then which one do you use most frequently)?

Oooh, compelling discussion topic.

I've been using ubuntu on my home PC for a couple years now and for work whatever Windows variant that is provided--currently XP. My phone runs Windows Mobile. My wii supposedly runs a proprietary linux.

I think I use my home PC and wii together more than my work laptop and phone, so I'm going to say I use linux the most.

Well, unlike the Old Testament topic, I'm on the side of phlegm, and not tkrantilles.

As of relatively recently, I run Ubuntu Linux, and, in a lot of ways, I like it more than Windows. However, I also run Windows XP inside of a virtual machine, so I can run Windows inside of Linux (albeit with only 15 GB allocated to it). That way I can use programs that do not run on Linux (probably the only down side to using Linux; Microsoft Office is WAY better than OpenOffice, for one--though I don't even have MS Office installed on my Windows).

The one thing that's better about Linux is that it is much more secure. First of all, nobody writes viruses for it anyway. Second of all, it is set up with better security capabilities (user processes do not run with root privileges by default). I also like the fact that it seems to be more easily customizable and more conducive to learning how to program (I'm a comp. sci. major).

As for Vista, I haven't used it much, though I've heard a lot of bad things about it. But I can't really make a good judgment as I do not know enough about it. I already know that I don't like Office 2007 (which comes with Vista). Everything is organized differently, and I don't like to have to figure out where everything is. Not to mention, I find it annoying that, by default, it skips a line when you press ENTER.

Waste of money, Windows 7 is coming out in the next year or so.

Very true, but in my case, necessity was the mother of expenditure...

I assume that by "Mac OS", you mean "Mac OS X".

I'd be curious to see if any Mac OS 9 or earlier users frequent this board.

Well, I got a laptop for Christmas '08 and it had Vista on it, so that's what I use. It's fine for my purposes.
