your music

Years ago this board was a hangout for a lot of kids making their own music. Some were on Plastiq comps, some became Plastiq bands, others were a little more under the radar. Things are quieter now but I thought it'd be fun to see a show of hands for folks that have been inspired to make their own songs.

And just to illustrate that the bar is quite low here, I'll go first. I tinkered around on the piano making songs since I was little. Once I started listening to Joy Electric in high school, I switched wholesale over to synths. My first synth was an Akai that I bought off Erik Melzer. I think I worked most of the summer to raise money for it. I made a few songs but never put anything out. Mostly gave it all up after leaving for college. But a couple years ago I realized that I missed it, despite the fact that I hadn't really been very successful at it. So now I work a regular job and come home and try to work on music as a hobby. I still lean toward analog synths but I'm also intrigued by samplers. I just bought a Roland S-770 recently and am learning how to navigate it.

Who's next?

My group, The Evertronic is currently doing remixes for groups all over the US. I'm really hoping I can land a remix of a Dwarf Mountain Alphabet song. I hope I haven't bugged Ronnie about it too much. But seeing as he remixed one of our songs, and I got the honor of cowriting a song with him, that's not too far fetched, is it?
Here's some of our newer remixes:
http://www.soundcloud.com/the-evertronic

If any fellow artists would like a remix from us, hit me up, and I'll see what my partner is up for taking on :)

Currently working on a 3 EP release concept. More news later.

having a divers cultural experience in my early life i gravitated to music because of its memetic significance. i really find people from the in dust realised cultures to be patently ignorant, which i attribute to the majority of the information they receive about the world being from artificial, culturally accredited sources. "you don't just get to be on the radio because you make good music".

my focus shifted to music software development with synthedit's vst publishing facility in order to increase access to the means of expression and thereby increase the diversity of expression in the medium. mission accomplished huh.

accordingly my musical expression became more focused on technique over communication (insofar as the medium isn't the message) and my ear became accustomed to sounds other people would consider unmusical. if i was interested in a melody it would be rendered without a need to accoutre it conventionally, because i can fill in or remove elements in my imagination. my musical hand became "lazy" or really unnecessary for my own enjoyment and recording.

modes of expression that were voluminous enough to comprise a collection are at

there's some other music and lots of synth demos at http://www.xoxos.net

the best of last year's pop phase
http://www.xoxos.net/temp/wayyouwantit.mp3

most recently i've been recording experiments in a self-defined genre 'new blend' -

a new blend track should have about two parts.. a bass and a lead, and a fairly conventional, non-overt percussion setting. the interest should be in the sequence, so minimal effects.

a new blend track has two parts that are dicretely different.. often in different time signatures. overall song length is about 1 minute, so enough time for ABA or ABAB. a musical tone should be described, the transition between parts established, the overall intent is transitory, eg. to brush upon many different settings within one listening session.

Yo David. Nice to see you here and whatnot.

I used to do a lot of musical things, though I never really got that far. I had FL Studio 8, and I also have a Korg Microkorg, but i havent done anything with the korg yet... I have no decent recording software, and my compy is too slow for me to use it as a midi player on FL Studio. It's fun though.

That was my thing a while back. I almost finished another album, but then I got tired of being stuck in the same mode over and over again, so i stopped.

I have recently been considering attempting music again after listening to some of my older stuff today. Not sure what yet. I play minecraft and lose track of time, soooo... yeah.

*EDIT*

wasted a lot of time on minecraft.

Here's the first two songs I ever wrote, and some of the only songs of mine on the web (I started about 2 years ago when I was 19...I was a late bloomer).

They're kinda embarrassing and really primitive (I just used a Akai XR20 for the drums and a crappy guitar I acquired in high school for 50 bucks).

I also didn't know any recording techniques, but oh well. Even though they're slightly embarrassing I still kinda like em (especially the end bit of the 2nd one - which weirdly cuts off). Hopefully you will too.

The rest of my tracks are on soundcloud, but I've also posted them in a different thread.

Hey Xoxos, That song you posted was quite schnazzy. Pray tell, how was it that those vocals were generated? I enjoy them immensely.

I've got three projects: One is solo project called makeyrselflovely, one is a dup with my best friend called Scripted Failures, and the other is a 6 piece that my best friend and Scripted Failures band mate joined called Or the Children's Crusade. makeyrselflovely ranges from indie rock to synth pop to experimental madness. Scripted Failures is indie rock, for lack of better phrasing. Some people say that they have heard some new wave influence in it. Or the Children's Crusade has been called everything from Post-Springsteen to Tom Petty Shoegaze to Cutting-Edge Folk.

In makeyrselflovely and Scripted Failures I play guitar, bass, drums, glockenspiel, synths, piano, and sing. In Or the Children's Crusade I play synths, glockenspiel, and occasional aux percussion.

Here's where you can find music:
makeyrselflovely - www.facebook.com/makeyrselflovely
Scripted Failures - www.facebook.com/scriptedfailures
Or the Children's Crusade - www.youtube.com/user/OtCCHSV

I'd post Or the Children's Crusade's bandcamp page, but the songs that are up there are before the band became the 6 piece monster it is now, so it doesn't sound like we sound now. However, our live videos do!

Hope someone enjoys at least one of these. I feel so vain writing all this haha...

> scripted failures

love the name.. fb page doesn't seem to like my browser

> vocals

my vst 'syng2' (le version.. just loads faster) - notes are sequenced on midi channel 1, phonemes on chan 2. version 3 is about 90% finished if i ever get around to it, sounds much more realistic but i'll probably keep it to myself since it's my voice..
